About This Object

Giant Frogfish are highly variable in colour, body pattern and body textures. Colour variations include pink, orange, yellow, black and purple. The gill operculum (gill slit) is covered by skin with the exhalant opening located under the pectoral fin to disguise movement whilst breathing.

The Giant Frogfish is a benthic (sea bed-dwelling) species found on the tropical coral reef area throughout the Indo-Pacific, Red Sea and the Caribbean regions.

It is a carnivore, feeding on a range of prey, both invertebrate and vertebrate, and can consume prey items the same length as its own body. It is an ambush predator, relying on camouflage. The first dorsal spine is modified into a moveable fishing rod tipped with a fleshy lure called an esca. The esca is used to draw prey into striking distance.
