About This Object

Plate Coral colonies grow as flat plates in tiers or whorls, sometimes forming bowl structures. Their colour ranges across purple, blue, brown and orange.

Plate Coral is sometimes common on tropical coral reefs. It is found in shallow waters, at a range of depths from 5 to 25 m, in the Red Sea, and Indo-Pacific from eastern Indonesia to Fiji and the Great Barrier Reef.

The polyps feed on plankton but also use symbiotic zooxanthellae (micro-algae) to maximize energy consumption of waste products through photosynthesis.
