LIBRARY
Our current special collections books display shows 19th century books that mapped Africa, chosen by one of our library volunteers.
The 19th century was an important time for mapping Africa. Within a 100 years Africa went from being a mysterious place to a continent that had been carved up between Colonial powers.
The books featured show the limits of geographical knowledge of the time: some of the maps show nonexistent lakes and fictitious mountain ranges, while rivers like the Niger, Congo and Nile had not then been fully charted.
