TEXTILES

Japanese gift covering cloth depicting the Seven Gods of HappinessThere are over 6,500 items in the Horniman's textile collections, from many different countries and cultures. They show the enormous variety of textile traditions across the world, and employ a wide range of manufacturing techniques and designs.

Our textile collections are stored at our external storage facility the Study Collections Centre. Because textiles are light sensitive and need special handling they cannot be displayed in the Museum galleries for longer than a year at a time.

In 2003, funding from the Designation Challenge Fund enabled the Horniman to open a Textile Exhibition Space in which to display some of the wonderful examples of textiles and costume from its stored collections.

Each year we put on a new exhibition, using items from our collection. The exhibition theme may focus on textiles from a particular culture or country, on a particular material or process, or on a way in which textiles are used to express ideas about family, gender, status or other cultural concerns. The exhibitions will be supported with information on our web site, talks and educational activities.
