Photographic competition

Fox Horniman Gardens, Forest Hill. Paolo ViscardiThe Horniman Museum / Grant Museum of Zoology / Society of Biology Darwin200 theme: Exploring and Investigating Nature.

To celebrate the birth of both Darwin and his theory of evolution by means of Natural Selection, the Horniman Museum and its partners, the Grant Museum of Zoology and the Society of Biology, staged a photographic competition with the aim of inspiring people to emulate Darwin’s fascination with nature.

217 entries of stunning quality were received with images ranging from the Galapagos to Darwin’s garden in Bromley; from the simplest mosses to our closest relatives, the great apes. The judging panel consisted of: Emma Carter, Dr. Dan Glaser, Kate Humble, Prof. Steve Jones, Randal Keynes OBE, Prof. Diane Newell OBE and Heini Schneebeli. The thirteen winning entries, their diverse subjects underscored by a common investigative spirit, are now on display in Gallery Square.

The winning entrants have all been contacted, but unfortunately we are unable to send our individual commiserations to unsuccessful entrants. We sincerely thank you for taking part – the quality of the entries was exceptional and each photograph faced stiff competition.

We hope you have the opportunity to visit the exhibition, but should you wish to see the successful entries online they are available at the BBC news website.
