Built in 1936, the Arts and Crafts style Sunken Garden has spectacular floral displays in spring and late summer. |

Wildlife Garden
This garden is packed with ideas for how to attract wildlife to gardens and green spaces. Groups can use it free of charge. We also run facilitated school and community group sessions. Please contact the Gardens Access and Learning Officer on 0208 699 1872 ext. 124 or edutton@horniman.ac.uk. |
Africa Garden
The Africa Garden was originally planted by the BBC's Groundforce team at the British Museum in 2005 in collaboration with Horniman Gardens staff, Kew Gardens and the Eden Project. It was then re-planted at the Horniman Gardens in 2006 to bring a flavour of Africa to south east London. The garden is beginning to flourish with an abundance of banana plants and native African horticulture. |
The Avenue
The main entrance to the Museum and Gardens, lined with historic horse chestnut trees. |
South Downs
A quiet contemplative area at the eastern edge of the site offering views over Kent and the South Downs. |
Meadow Field
The large green field below the Bandstand, this is the only area of the Gardens where you may walk dogs off their lead. The area originally included a boating pond, constructed in the 1920's, but this was drained and resurfaced in the 1960's and is now used as a play area. |
Grass Areas
Providing the perfect spot for a picnic, or simply to relax and idle the day away. |
Tea Clipper Rose Display
A display of Tea Clipper roses, near to the Sunken Garden, named and planted in 2006 to commemorate the centenary of the death of founder Frederick Horniman. |
