HOW TO HELP

Evolution 2010 - visit the site

ButterflyWith the Aquarium open, we are now embarking on the next stage of 'Evolution 2010', the redevelopment of our spaces devoted to the natural world, with the refurbishment of our Natural History Gallery and Gardens.

Drawing in the Horniman's extensive collections and outside spaces, 'Evolution 2010' will provide an inspiring gateway to the London environment and our relationship with the world about us. Although work is not due to start until 2009, we need to start our early fundraising now in order to get the project underway.

'Evolution 2010' is a major undertaking for the Horniman. This second phase will cost £5 million and we are actively seeking support from individuals, companies, trusts and foundations. If you would like to know more about the project, or suggest who might be interested in helping this important environmental project, please contact Marcus Pugh in the Development Office. Tel: (020) 8291 8699 or email him at development@horniman.ac.uk.

Visit the Evolution 2010 website for more information about the project, or read our Evolution 2010 press release.

The Gilded Monster Bass Appeal – A Monster Thank you!

Man playing the tubaWe are very pleased to announce the acquisition of the Gilded Monster Bass, the mascot "instrument" of Boosey & Hawkes. The 6’6" tuba stood as a figurehead on the porch roof of the Edgware factory for nearly fifty years until its removal in the late 1990s. On loan to the Horniman since November 2006, the Museum has now raised the purchase price of £10,000 in order to make this much loved item a permanent part of our Music Gallery.

"We are delighted to be able to secure the tuba for the Horniman. It is immensely popular with visitors and is becoming an icon of the Music Gallery. As a highly visible symbol of instrument production at Boosey & Hawkes it is a very significant acquisition. The purchase of the tuba is an extremely important addition to the Boosey & Hawkes collection and helps us to preserve this important chapter of instrument making in Britain."
Bradley Strauchen
Deputy Keeper of Musical Instruments

We would like to thank those who made this acquisition possible through their support and generosity including the Friends of the Horniman and the many donors who gave to this appeal.
