About this event

Come along to these fun family sessions that will explore a different theme linked to the collections in our galleries, like animals, costume, masks, music and toys to name a few.

Sessions are aimed at families with children aged 3+.  The first two sessions are aimed at younger children in particular.

22 Apr - Toys: find out why toys and playing are so important, then have fun playing with some of the toys from our collection. 
29 Apr - Masks: find out about some of the special occasions that people wear masks for, then try on some of the masks from our collection.

6 May - Flying Animals: can you think of any animals that can fly? You might just be surprised by the different ones that can! Then explore some of the taxidermy animals from our collection. 
13 May - Puppets: find out how puppets from different countries are used to tell stories, then have a go at making the puppets move yourself.
20 May - Animals: find out how and why animals change their bodies or behaviour to survive in the wild and then touch taxidermy animals from our collection.
27 May - Fossils: what is a fossil? Find out how fossils are formed, then touch real fossils and see if you can name any of the fossils from our collection.

3 June - Puppets: find out how puppets from different countries are used to tell stories, then have a go at making the puppets move yourself.
10 June - Toys: find out why toys and playing are so important, then have fun playing with some of the toys from our collection. 
17 June - Family sessions will be run by one of our community partners, Arts Network to celebrate Creativity and Wellbeing Week. Check out the What's On calendar for further information.
24 June - Family sessions will be run by some of our community partners to celebrate the end of Refugee Week. Check out the What's On calendar for further information.

1 July - Flying Animals: can you think of any animals that can fly? You might just be surprised by the different ones that can! Then explore some of the taxidermy animals from our collection. 
8 July - India: find out about and touch the Indian puppets, costume, masks and musical instruments in our collections to celebrate the start of our Indian Summer season.
15 July - Costume: find out why people in different parts of the world wear different kinds of clothes, then try on some of the costumes we have.
22 July - Music: find out why people from around the world play music and then enjoy playing some of the instruments from our collection.
29 July - Animals: find out how and why animals change their bodies or behaviour to survive in the wild and then touch taxidermy animals from our collection.

5 August - Masks: find out about some of the special occasions that people wear masks for, then try on some of the masks from our collection.
12 August - Our normal Explore sessions will be replaced by short storytelling sessions (one week only)
19 August - Animals: find out how and why animals change their bodies or behaviour to survive in the wild and then touch taxidermy animals from our collection.
26 August - Carnival: find out why and how people in different countries celebrate Carnival, and then join in the celebration by trying on masks and playing instruments from our collection.

2 September - Music: find out why people from around the world play music and then enjoy playing some of the instruments from our collection.
9 September - Nature: find out why different mini-beasts, animals and plants are so important to people and the planet and then touch amazing objects from our collection.
16 September - Toys: find out why toys and playing are so important, then have fun playing with some of the toys from our collection. 
23 September - Flying Animals: can you think of any animals that can fly? You might just be surprised by the different ones that can! Then explore some of the taxidermy animals from our collection. 
30 September - Masks: find out about some of the special occasions that people wear masks for, then try on some of the masks from our collection.
