Visiting as a community group

The Handson Base

Contact the Community Learning team on communitylearning@horniman.ac.uk or 020 8291 8690 to discuss how your service users can benefit from some of the following opportunities.

Free training for you - Community projects with our Objects

Are you a group leader? Would you like to bring your service users into the Hands On Base to touch and explore thousands of objects from all over the world? This one day workshop plus two 1-1 sessions will provide training in using our objects to run your project, including:

  • How to handle and care for museum objects
  • A practical guide to using the Hands On Base gallery
  • Ideas for developing projects with your group
  • A tour and introduction to the museum, its collections, galleries and gardens
  • Opportunities for networking with other community groups

First Saturdays

On the first Saturday afternoon of each month, the Hands On Base is set aside for pre-booked community group visits and sessions. Contact the Community Learning team for more information.

Project work

The Hands On Base is an object-based learning centre for all, with Discovery Boxes of handling objects and over 1,500 display objects that can be used to support learning or be the starting point for community group projects. There is also a small performance area to encourage all sorts of performance arts, from puppets to poetry. Contact the Community Learning team for more information.

The galleries are fully accessible and the Community Learning team would be happy to advise on specific activities in response to the particular interests, abilities, access or learning needs of your group.
