            "value": "Sir (William Matthew) Flinders Petrie (1853-1942), Egyptologist, born in Charlton, Kent on 3 June 1853. Petrie had no formal education but developed a considerable interest in ancient Egypt, and first went to Egypt in 1880 to survey the pyramids. His work brought him to the attention of Amelia Edwards, novelist and traveller, who along with her influential friends created the Egypt Exploration Fund, which supported archaeological excavations in the country. By 1883, Petrie was leading expeditions in Tanis and the following year in Naucratis. \n\nIn 1892, Amelia Edward\u2019s died and bequeathed her collection of antiquities to University College London along with a capital sum to set up a chair of Egyptology, of which she selected Petrie as the first Professor. With this academic backing he managed to set up the British School of Archaeology in Egypt in 1894, whose subscribers would help fund all his future excavations. He was assisted by his wife, Hilda Mary Isabel (1871\u20131957), who was his constant companion in the field as well as being the secretary of the British School of Archaeology in Egypt. \nHe published frequently  but was most well known for his book, Methods and Aims in Archaeology (1904), in which he described his management of his workforce, his techniques of excavation, of recording, and of restoration, the packing and transport of antiquities, and the publication of results.\n \nPetrie left excavating in Egypt in 1926 and moved onto Hyskos sites in Palestine and Gaza. He died in Jerusalem in 1942 and is buried in the Protestant cemetery on Mount Zion."
