            "value": "Charles Newton began his museum career as a museum assistant at the Wisbech & Fenland Museum in 1967. He moved to the Victoria & Albert Museum in 1969, working in various departments including Circulation, Textiles, and Sculpture before moving to Prints and Drawings in 1975. He retired from the museum in 2005, as Deputy Head of Paintings.\n\nHe has organised exhibitions and displays on 'Photography in printmaking' (1979); 'Exotic places' (1979); 'Designs for British dress and furnishing fabrics: 18th century to the present' (1986); 'British architectural designs' (1987); 'Vroom!', an exhibition of automotive design and styling (1988); 'The Orient observed' (1989); 'Household choices' , examining consumer attitudes to contemporary design in the home (1990); 'Back of the envelope', examining the first thoughts of celebrated artists and designers (1995); drawings by Sir John Vanbrugh and his circle (1996); and 'John Frederick Lewis' (2004).\n\nNewton has published articles and lectured on a wide variety of subjects, including Victorian genre painting, printmaking, illustration, the Searight Collection, Orientalism, John Frederick Lewis, 19th-century design, British textile designs, Owen Jones and Christopher Dresser, Achille-Constant-Th\u00e9odore-\u00c9mile Prisse d'Avennes, and has contributed to many exhibition catalogues. His special interest is in pictures of the Ottoman Empire, particularly Turkey, and he has published various articles and reviews on this subject."
