            "value": "John Brown was born in 1890, and studied at the Universities of Glasgow and G\u00f6ttingen, receiving an MA and a BSc in 1911. In 1912, he worked as Assistant to the Professor of Natural Philosophy at Glasgow University, and from 1913 to 1919 as Assistant Master at Bellahouston Academy, Glasgow. He served in the Royal Flying Corps and Royal Air Force from 1915 to 1919, in France, Egypt and Palestine; he was twice mentioned in despatches, awarded the Military Cross in 1917, and appointed MBE in 1918. He married in 1919, and began working for the London County Council: as a District Inspector from 1919 to 1925; Assistant Education Officer, 1925-1936; Chief Inspector, 1936-1947; Deputy Education Officer, 1947-1951; and Education Officer, from 1951 until his retirement in September 1956. As Education Officer, he seems to have been the main conduit between the Horniman Museum and its governing Advisory Committee. He published a book on teaching science in schools in 1926,and in 1953 was awarded an LLD by Glasgow University. John Brown died in 1974."
