            "value": "Bristol City Museum and Art Gallery, originated in the foundation of the Bristol Institution for the Advancement of Science and Art in 1823. by 1871, the institution had merged with the Bristol Library society and in 1872 opened as a combined musuem and library. In 1899, Sir William Henry Wills (1830-1911), offered to help pay for the new City Art Gallery and in February 1905, the new museum and art gallery opened. \n\nDuring the museum's long history it has expanded but also suffered significant setbacks such as the bomb damage incurred during the Second World War that destroyed 17,000 natural history specimens. \n\nThe museum hosts galleries on ethnographic art, Egyptology, natural history and archaeology. In 2012, the museum was gifted the entire 50,000 piece collection of the former British Empire Commonwealth Museum.\n\nIn 1966, the Horniman recieved a large collection of what was described as 'redundant oriental material' from the Bristol Museum. In 1994, several more items were transferred that had been initially set aside for the 1966 transfer but had been seperated from the rest of the material."
