"value": "The British Museum, the first national public museum in the world, was founded in1753, after Sir Hans Sloane bequeathed his personal collection of over 71,000 objects to King George II for the nation. The founding collection included antiquities, coins, medals, natural history specimens and a library. The museum first opened to the public in January 1759, with the current building being built by 1857. The natural history collections were moved to South Kensington in the 1880s, and this became the Natural History Museum. In the 1800s many important classical antiquities were acquired, including the Rosetta stone. Between 1826 and 1897 Sir Augustus Wollaston Franks expanded the collection by collecting prehistoric and ethnographic objects from Europe in addition to oriental art and British antiquities. The twentieth century saw an expansion in public services, including providing education and establishing a publishing company. In 1973 the library became a new organisation, the British Library, which in 1997 moved to its own premises. New permanent galleries continue to open and the museum is committed to expanding its collections to include contemporary objects, and to improve the breadth of its collections. The museum welcomes around 6 million visitors a year."
