            "value": "Mr Patrick Michael Byrne (sometimes written Byrne in our documentation) was born in Limerick, Ireland, son of a Catherine Byrne (n\u00e9e Hayes) and Michael Byrne. Following Byrne senior's death, in or before 1864, Catherine emigrated to Melbourne, Australia. She either took Patrick with her, or he may have followed at a later date. \n\nPatrick Byrne spent 50 years working as a telegraph operator based at Charlotte Waters, a remote Overland Telegraph repeater station known to some as \u2018Bleak House\u2019 because of its remote and desolate position. Byrne collected ethnographic and natural history specimens, conducting field work amongst the Aboriginal people of Central Australia. He maintained extensive correspondence with anthropologist Sir Walter Baldwin Spencer, whom he met as a result of the Horn Expedition of 1894. Although not trained or educated in Anthropology, Byrne carried out fieldwork, collecting the raw data and specimens to be sent to Baldwin in Melbourne. Late in his life Baldwin paid tribute to Byrne for \u2018his generosity and long friendship. I am deeply indebted for invaluable help in my Zoological work\u2019. \n\nIn 1896 Byrne  wrote a paper in the Proceedings of the Royal Society of Victoria titled 'Note on the customs connected with the use of so called kurdaitcha shoes of Central Australia', described as \"A careful piecing together of kurdaitcha revenge technique from accounts obtained from old men in the Charlotte Waters area in 1892.\" Byrne also discovered the Kowari, or Byrne\u2019s Marsupial Mouse (Dasyuroides byrnei), which was described by Sir Walter Baldwin Spencer in 1896 and named after Byrne."
