Oldman (publication and year not provided):
Mr. William Fagg, honorary secretary of the Royal Anthropological Institute, writes: -
I should like to pay brief tribute on behalf of the Royal Anthropological Institute to the memory of Mr. William Oldman, who died, after a short illness, on July 1. He was an old and highly valued Fellow of the institute and had exerted a great influence on contemporary ethnologists, as well as artists, here and abroad, through the magnificent collection of primitive art which he had amassed. His collection of oceanic, and especially Polynesian art was rivalled only, for size and quality, by that of the British Museum, and his West African bronzes and wood carvings have provided many of the finest exhibits in the successful exhibition of colonial sculpture now on show at this institute. He was always ready to show the collection to students, and his own endearing qualities made him innumerable friends from all parts of the world.

historical collectors file;Mr. Oldman fights for his ‘museum’ house(publication and year not provided):
Mr. W. Oldman, who has an ethnographical collection which is almost a museum on its own in his house in Poynders-road, Clapham Park, appealed to-day against being compelled to sell his house to London County Council in connection with the County of London (Clarence-avenue, Wandsworth) Compulsory Purchase Order.
Under this order the LCC are buying an area of about 29 acres in Clapham Park, bordered by Poynders-road, Clarence-avenue and King’s avenue, for a housing scheme.

At a public inquiry in Wandsworth Town Hall Mr. Oldman told the chairman, Mr. H. McGregor Wood, of the Ministry of Health, that his collection is stored in seven of the rooms of his large Victorian house.

“The British Museum have said that the collection is of national importance, and people from different parts of the world have visited my house” he said. “The whole collection weighs 30 tons, and it would be very difficult to move it to other premises. The collection has been my hobby for 45 years”.
Mr. Harold Woolcott, assistant valuer to the LCC, said this was a case of a particular hardship, but the council were faced with the urgent need for housing accommodation.

After the hearing Mr. Oldman said “The collection is recognised throughout the world as of great scientific value. I cannot give the monetary value.” Several people living in houses that come within the area also objected to being forced to sell their houses.
Dr. Ronald Anderson, who occupies one of the modern houses in Clarence-avenue, said his house was used also for professional purposes, as he had his surgery there. Part of his garden would be taken in the new housing scheme.

Mr. H. Blaine, for the LCC, said the doctor’s house would not be pulled down. Other objectors were a garage and petrol filling station proprietor, and the owner of a lawn tennis club. Mr. McGregor said he would visit the property and the results of the inquiry would be made known at some later date.

historical collectors file; List of quotes about Oldman, source unknown
see historical collectors file"
