Leith-Ross:
Dear Mrs. Leith-Ross,

I have been given to understand that you are related to Major F.H. Ruxton, C.M.G., who presented a very fine collection of Nigerian material to this Museum in 1931. If this is not so, please accept my apologies and disregard this letter.

There is in the library here a manuscript entitled Munshi Papers,* which appear to have been written mainly by an Administrative Officer, Mr. C.F. Rowe, during 1917-1918. Also included is some correspondence, dated 1912, in which reference is made to the expected arrival of a Captain Ruxton in the October of that year.
I have assumed that this Captain Ruxton and Major F.H. Ruxton are one and the same. I wondered whether you could tell me when Major Ruxton first served in Nigeria and whether you feel my assumption is justified.

We should be most grateful for your help.
Yours sincerely,
(Mrs.) V.E. Vowles
Assistant Curator
*29.10.74. Curator agreed that this be kept and might later be deposited with RAI [?], if Mrs. Leith-Ross’ memories should go there.

historical file; Sylvia Leith- Ross; 25 June1947; Letter of Sylvia Leith Ross to Mrs. Vowles:
Dear Mrs. Vowles,

I must apologise for the delay in answering your letter of the 12th of June. I have been away from home for a few days.
Yes, Captain (later Major) Fitz Herbert Ruxton was my eldest brother. Unfortunately, my memory is poor and as a family, we never kept diaries and only a few letters so I fear that my replies to your questions may possibly be inaccurate.

All that I remember of those early years was that my brother was in Worcestershire Regiment. Finding military life dull in England, he was seconded to the Royal Niger Company Police, went to Nigeria and “lived chiefly on hulks…”. He rejoined his regiment for the South African war, was soon wounded and sent home.

After Northern Nigeria had been taken over from the Royal Niger Company by Sir Frederick Lugard in 1900, he was again seconded, this time to the Northern Nigeria Civil Service. That must have been in 1901 or 1902. He was posted as ‘Political Officer’ to Ilorin and then to Arungu in Sokoto Province before being put in charge of what was then known as Muri Province where he would of course have had many dealings with the Munshi.

At first, his headquarters were at Amar, then at IBI. I myself was at Ibi with him and his wife about 1912.

I knew the name of C.F. Rowe but cannot remember meeting him. He probably took over the Province from my brother when the latter was posted to Bornu shortly before the outbreak of the First World War. The Munshi Papers should be of some interest, now that the Tiv have so increased in numbers and importance.

When next I am in London, I hope you will allow me to see my brother’s collection. I remember him speaking of the Horniman Museum, hoping the few objects he had collected might be of interest.

Yours sincerely,
Sylvia Leith- Ross.

historical file; Record form Ancestry.co.uk:
Ruxton had x 15 star Nigh and held the roll of Off. 234

historical file; The Development of the British Colonial Administration among the Tiv, 1900-1949 by David Craig Dorward; This article provides background information on the colonial administration of the region from which the object originates, and refers to the Donor’s work as a Colonial Administrator in more detail.
It is available on Jstor:
African Affairs, Vol. 68, No. 273 (Oct.,1969), pp316-333
http:/www.jstor.org/stable/720655"
