            "value": "Charles Gabriel Seligman (1873-1940) was born on Christmas Eve to Hermann and Olivia Seligmann (they final \u2018n\u2019 in their surname was dropped in 1914). He was educated at St Paul\u2019s School, London and went on to study medicine at St. Thomas' Hospital in 1892. Although he had little interest in clinical medicine he was particularly interested in tropical medicine and accompanied the Torres Straits expedition of 1898 as expedition doctor led by A.C. Haddon. Seligman intended to study plants and native medicine, but extended his observations to associated rituals and pathology, in particular the testing of native colour perception. \n\nOn his return to Britain, he gained a position at the Salters\u2019 Company research fellow at St Thomas\u2019s Hospital in 1901, where he became superintendent of the clinical laboratory, and in 1906 MD, his main interest had become ethnography. In 1904, he became the scientific director for an expedition to New Guinea led by the American Major Cooke-Daniels and collected material in the mekeo, Roro, and Massim areas of Papua which provided materials for his publication, The Melanesians of Briiths New Guinea, published in 1910. \n\nIn 1905, he married Brenda Zara (1883-1965), anthropologist, and she became her husband\u2019s co-worker in ethnography. Their joint research on the aboriginal Vedda people of Ceylon led to the book, the Veddas, in 1911 and they also embarked in expeditions in the Sudan based on the pagan Nilotic tribes (1909-10, 1911-12), which also led to a publication, Pagan Tribes of the Bilotic Sudan (1932). \n\nSeligman, was appointed professor of ethnography at the London School of Economics in 1913 and held the chair until 1934. He was elected FRS in 1919 and was made a Hunterian professor, Arris and Gale lecturer of the Royal College of Surgeons, and Lloyd Roberts lecturer of the Royal College of Physicians in 1935. During the First World War, he served as captain in the Royal Army Medical Corps and treated shell-shock. The experience influenced both him and Brenda, and both wrote on the relevance of psychology to social organisation. \nIn 1966 'The Seligman Collection of Oriental Art' exhibition was held in London, after which the joint collection of Brenda Zara and Charles Seligman was divided between the British Museum and the Victoria & Albert Museum."
