"value": "Walter Gill is the author of the \u2018Petermann Journey\u2019. Published in 1968, it is a diary of his travels in May to June 1931 through the Petermann Ranges, west of Alice Springs with Robert Buck. They visited an aboriginal tribe and it was during these travels, it is presumed, that he collected the three objects donated to the Horniman Museum in 1998 by F. Hugh Eveleigh whose mother was a friend of Gill. \nGill was born in Prahran, Victoria and educated in Melbourne. After service in World War 1, he worked in Fiji on the sugar plantations, including working for the Colonial Sugar Refining Company in Lautoka. He wrote another book, 'Turn North-East at Tombstone' about his experiences in Fiji. This was published posthumously in 1970.\nFollowing the Petermann expedition he worked in cattle farming, served during World War II and became a professional fisherman before retiring to live in Maitland near Adelaide where he died in 1969."
