(Died 9 Oct. 1932.)\n\nhistorical collectors file; The Times; 11 October 1932; Obituary Sir Everard Im Thurn Colonial Governor and Scientist:\nSir Everard Im Thurn, Colonial governor, explore, anthropologist, and naturalist, died at Cockenzie House, Prestonpans, on Saturday, at the age of 80.\nThe third son of Mr. John Conrad Im Thurn, merchant banker, Everard Ferdinand Im Thurn was a kinsman of Rear-Admiral J.K. Im Thurn, and of the late Mr. C.D. Im Thurn, through whom the famous Zinovieff letter, which figured so largely in the General Election of 1924, was brought to light. He was educated at Marlborough and Exeter College, Oxford, where he took his degree in 1875, and was elected an honorary Fellow 50 years later. His first published work was on the birds of Marlborough in 1869.\n\nIn 1877 he went to British Guiana as curator of the museum, and did much exploring work; he made the first ascent of Roraima, and published in 1886 a work on the botanical results of the expedition. Meanwhile, in 1882 he had been appointed special magistrate of the Pomerun River, and in 1890 was transferred to the post of Government Agent in the North-Western District of the Colony. After a period of employment on the Venezuelan Boundary Commission he joined the staff of the Colonial Office in 1899, and was a principal clerk when in 1901 he was appointed Colonial Secretary and Lieutenant \u2013Governor of Ceylon. He was a botanist, explorer, anthropologist and administrator; first in Guiana (Guyana), 1881-97, then in Ceylon (Sri Lanka), and finally in Fiji as Colonial Governor, and High Commissioner of the Western Pacific, 1904-1910.             "value": "Sir Everald Im Thurn, was born in 1852 and educated at Marlborough and Exeter College, Oxford. He was appointed curator of the British Guiana Museum in 1877 on the recommendation of Sir Joseph Hooker, then Director of the Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew. Whilst in British Guinana, Im Thurn spent a great deal of time exploring and learning about the indigenous tribes of the region. He published a number of articles and books about the tribes and customs of the tribes of Guiana and set up a journal, Timehri, about the country. His exploration of the country included the famous ascent of the table top mountain of Roraima. He served as magistrate at Pomeroon, 1882-1891, before leaving the country for positions on the Venezuelan bondary commission (1897-1899) and Leiutenant Governor and Colonial Secretary of Ceylon (1901-1904) before being appointed Governor of Fiji and High Commissioner of the Western Pacific from 1904-1910. \n Im Thurn recieved many honours in his lifetime and among then he was a fellow of both the Royal Geographical Society (serving as Vice President 1914-1917) and the President of the Royal Anthropological Institute (1919-1920). He was created C.M.G. in 1892\nand K.C.M.G. in 1905, C.B. in 1900, and K.B.E. in 1918."
