Taxidermy case of two adult male and immature female Pomarine Skua. According to Edward Hart, writing on 9 May 1927, 'Left (no 1): immature female, October 1879, winter plumage; top right (no 2). adult male, October 1879, winter plumage; bottom right (no 3): adult male, September 1887, winter plumage. All three shot by me in Christchurch Harbour. During October of 1879 we had quite an invasion of this species, nearly all of them unfortunately had at this date lost the two central tail feathers. They rarely fish on their own account , but hover about the flocks of other gulls, and as soon as one has taken a fish mob it until it disgorges, and catch the fish before it reaches the water. Sexes alike, summer and winter plumage differ. Mounted by me'.
