Clarinet in C, stamped 'RUDALL, CARTE & CO./20 CHARING CROSS'. An inscription on a metal plate above the keywork reads ' Royal Italian Opera 2'. The varnished red cocuswood body has sixteen white metal keys and four white metal ferrules. The keys, with saltspoon cup covers, are mounted on pillars. Simple system F-sharp/C-sharp key. There are rollers on the long keys (on both sides) and throat register A key. An additional vent key is coupled to the throat register A key. The E-flat/B-flat key is fitted with duplicate touches (cross and side). A miniature open-key system for left hand fingers two and three provides full venting of this part of the compass, and a similar mechanism for right hand fingers two and three provides a fully vented B-flat/F. Body is in one piece, but wooden mouthpiece is separate. Compare C.R. Clarinets in the key of C were a regular feature of the nineteenth- century English orchestra. With the advent of more advanced key systems, players began to transpose C parts and play them on their Bb instruments and the C instrument became obsolete.
