However by the mid 17th century mining was in decline and miners relied on wood carving and turning to earn their livings. The decline of the mining industry coincided with the rise of the lace making industry for which the wood turners were able to provide wooden bobbins. The town of Seiffen, well known today for still producing high quality wooden toys owes much of its success to Johann Friedrich Hiemann who in 1699 first took Seiffen toys to Nuremberg market, a toy distribution market for the whole of Europe at that time. Seiffen\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s success in the toy market was due not only to the high quality of its toys but also to the economic depression in the Erzgebirge region which meant that their prices were much lower. From the beginning of the 19th century when ring turning was introduced Seiffen became well known for this type of toy making. Today this town is still making toys and has ensured that the skills continue by opening a toy making school where both boys and girls study for three years before being employed by local manufacturers.
