            "value": "From Charles Newton 2013.10.31: 'The costume is difficult. It does not seem to be a uniform in the conventional sense, there are no indicators of military or naval rank. After the Tanzimat of the 1830s, military costume was very Europeanised in any case \u00e2\u20ac\u201c the most Ottoman thing worn was the fez.  It is rather a showy outfit that might have been worn by a dandy, or a servant, (the equivalent of livery), or even a wedding outfit. I would say Ottoman, late 19th century -  early 20th century in date. The embroidery on the mintan (coat with sleeves), and on the yelek (waistcoat) is high quality, and the g\u00c3\u00b6mlek (shirt), with what I presume is the separate lace collar, is rather fine. The breeches, (zipka or perhaps salvar) look in very good condition \u00e2\u20ac\u201c can hardly have been worn.  I am not an expert on costume, and I might have not used the correct Ottoman terms in this particular case. I expect that Wingfield Digby [George Wingfield Digby, F.R.S.A., who was Keeper of Textiles at the V&A in the 1940s] passed it on to the Horniman as he would have regarded it as folk costume \u00e2\u20ac\u201c therefore ethnography, and not part of their remit.'"

            "value": "From Christopher Marsden, Senior Archivist at the V&A, relating to the costume:  \n \nThe Nominal File for Horniman Museum & Library (archive reference MA\/1\/H2850) held in the Archive here has some papers relating to this costume. The relevant papers are RP\/1947\/2753, comprising a gift from marked 'Anonymous' and describing the object as 'A Turkish costume comprising 6 pieces'. There is a note in the file from a member of British Museum staff stating 'This Turkish dress was bought years ago in Constantinople as a memento, and perhaps may be of some use to replace. It is almost complete I believe. It seems a pity to leave it to the moths!'  \n \nA minute from a member of V&A staff states 'This modern Turkish costume is of no interest to us. The Horniman Mus. will probably want it.' The file contains a very little more paperwork relating to the costume including the usual letters of thanks for the gift from the Horniman. Newton, Charles: 2013-10-31."
