            "value": "This horn was made by William Bull in Haymarket in 1699. This instrument is part of the Adam Carse collection at the Horniman Museum. Carse was a teacher of composition and orchestration at the Royal Academy of Music in the mid 20th century. He collected musical instruments to demonstrate how their design and construction had developed. This instrument is significant because it is the earliest known example of a hoop-shaped horn to be produced in England. Before this time, most horns in England were short, straight instruments used in hunting. This circular design was patterned on horns played in French courts, and Bull is thought to be the earliest English maker to use the term 'french horn' to describe his instruments."
