sample (textileworking: barkcloth making); barkcloth; tapa

Rectangular cream barkcloth with painted decoration in light and dark brown. The textile is seemingly from a larger piece, as some of the patterns are cut. The design consists of 2 rectangular fields. They are separated by a narrow stripe. Each contains part of a cruciform motif which is subdivided by triangular patterns. The field with thin stripes either side also contains 2 circular motifs and part of a petalled motif. Below both sections runs a band with what appears to be writing. This is followd by a blank band, and a thin coloured band.

Some of this is incomplete and there may be errors. This part of the website is also still under construction, so there may be some fields repeated or incorrectly formatted information.

The database sometimes uses language taken from historical documents to help research, which may now appear outdated and even offensive. The database also includes information on objects that are considered secret or sacred by some communities.
