            "value": "Pearce Collection. The material of which the endere-s (ndere) acquired by the museum in 1974 are made is probably the swamp reed Phragmites mauretanicus. See Peter Cooke 'Ndere' in 'The New Grove Dictionary of Musical Instruments' edited by Stanley Sadie. (New York and London: Macmillan, 1984)  Vol 1,  p.753. (No thumbhole.)  Noted as originating from Buganda in documentation associated with instrument. Comment on instrument  by Peter Cooke, 2009: 'Maker is probably Mr. Blasio Busuulwa.  This particular size of endere is either called entabitabi or ensaasi (its length being midway between the flutes that I possess of Busuulwa's making). I would need to blow a note on it to check which, if that were possible. The Kabaka's abalere played on a consort of 6 different sized endere with a singer playing a long drum and accompanied by three or four other drums. such flutes also form part of the mixed ensemble once popular at wedding parties etc. one or more Iyres, a flute, one or more fiddles and drums) and it is also used singly with one or more drums to lead the singing of supporters at wrestling matches. \nThe reed used is phragmites mauretanicus (known locally as ekiwuuwa) available in many swamps in Uganda. The points at the nodes where leaf spikes emerge on alternate sides are traditionally plugged with wax and in Busuulwa's case covered with a small disc of foil from cigarette packets - though other materials may be used. This rules out a possible source of leaks. The copper winding is obtained from unserviceable electric armature windings and is used not only for decoration but, Busuulwa assured me, to improve the tone.             "value": "The ndere (plural: endere) is a notch flute played by the Ganda and Soga people of Southern Uganda. The fingerholes are positioned to give a pentatonic scale (counting upwards, the first, second, third, fifth and sixth notes of a European major scale), which corresponds with the notes used in Ganda and Soga songs, the basis of the endere's repertoire. The instrument is used in a variety of contexts. The  Kabaka king's flute band (abalere) played on a consort of 6 different sized endere with a singer playing a long drum engalabi  and accompanied by three or four other drums. Such flutes also form part of the mixed ensemble once popular at events such as wedding parties,  consisting of one or more Iyres, a flute, one or more fiddles and drums.  Wrestling matches are an important part of Ganda culture, and endere groups are often employed to lead the singing of the supporters of rival teams."

            "value": "Peter Cooke, Professor Emeritus, School of Scottish Studies, Edinburgh - e-mail dated 12th July 2017: \n(Instrument is made of) 'Phragmites Mauretanicus (which grows in many swamps throughout central Uganda and no doubt in many other parts of East Africa). \n\n'PS  I'm attaching a photo' (shown in author's MA thesis - link below)  'of such reeds cut freshly from a swamp and laid out for drying as part of the making process.  I helped Busuulwa collect these reeds (1965!).  The reeds were deliberately cut a few inches below the swamp surface (where the nodes lie closer together) and then they were trimmed of muck and any remaining roots (see the second pic which shows Busulwa cleaning up the reeds.).\n\n'Busuulwa said that having the nodes close together near the mouth-hole end gives extra strength to the body and a better firmer tone. They are then selected and cut to length according to their thickness which determines which of the 6 different sizes of endere each will become.  Thin reeds are used for the shortest flutes etc..\n\n'The third pic shows the flutes being taken from a pot where they have been placed, individually wrapped in  banana leaves, and and steamed for several hours to 'set' them so that they will not shrink more and also where they gain a stronger yellowish colour.  Here Busuulwa is cleaning on the the holes where the leaf scar can grow out on both sides of each node and plugging them with wax to ensure no future leakage.  Then a tiny piece of   'paper' mentioned in your description (or often, metal foil from cigarette packaging) is secured over each of the wax plugs.
