(The term 'didjeridu', however is English and is thought to have an onomatopoeic derivation.) The instrument is traditionally made from a branch of eucalyptus that has been hollowed out by termites. The main playing technique, used all over the Northern part of the Northern Territory, involves playing a low drone note continuously using circular breathing, while altering the sound quality through changes to the shape of the mouth, movements of the tongue and vocal effects. Another technique, which is specific to the Carpentaria region, involves pursing the lips to play the first harmonic, a higher, more piercing sound that creates percussive interruptions to the primary drone note."

Mouth-hole has no wax or other modifications but is bevelled on the outer surface to a narrow rim. Below the mouth-hole the outer diameter remains roughly even throughout, while the internal bore expands to the lower end. The internal surface is rough, possibly the result of having been bored out by termites. The outside surface is smooth and with painted decoration starting approximately 200 mm from the mouthpiece and covering the rest of the instrument. The decorated section consists of stylised depictions of frogs, lizards and snakes, outlined in white and filled with white spots and a brown and white cross-hatched design all on a black ground."
