            "value": "Community Commentary by Ashiyanbi, Akeem Abiodun within research project: 'Rethinking Relationships and Building Trust around African Collections' 2021\n\nHandmade in Nigeria, these Clay Pots (Ikoko) are typical utensils in households across West Africa. They are used to cook food, especially soup. They come in different sizes ranging from small, medium and large. Clay Pots are handmade by local potter who source their raw clay from river beds, which they take through the process of preparation before the moulding is embarked on. The pinching method is commonly used but for the larger ones moulds are used. Usually sundried to become bone dry, it eventually is subjected to open air firing and while still hot sprinkled with decoction to close up the pores and make the colours vary. Pottery has a long history in Africa and is one of the oldest arts. Pots are usually made by women. Though cheap and functional, African pots combine utility with great beauty. The procedure for making pots varies within the different communities that span the continent. Pots were used in rural communities for carrying water, the mass storage of food and milk, cooking food, serving and drinking beer. Built for an entirely functional use the vessels were easily and cheaply made as long as clay was locally available. The indigenous Yoruba pots are usually fired in an open firing atmosphere and potters usually engage in joint firing exercise (where two or more potters come together to fire pots). As clay pots are alkaline in nature, it interacts with the acidity in the food, hence neutralising the pH balance and making it healthier. As they are heat-resistant and the dish cooks slowly, you can cut down on extra oil, such as vegetables. Pots were tools for cooking, serving, and storing food and pottery was also an avenue of\nartistic expression. Prehistoric potters formed and decorated their vessels in a variety of\nways.\nThe indigenous Yoruba pots are usually fired in an open firing atmosphere and potters usually engage in joint firing exercise (where two or more potters come together to fire pots)."
