            "value": "Subsequent research shows that Lyell did not visit the Pacific and that he probably obtained this specimen from a friend. The axe is not in fact from New Guinea but from the Trobriands and formed a category of goods in the Kula exchange system. This type of axe is shown in Malinowski \"Argonauts of the Western Pacific\" pl V,V1, LIX. Partington vol II pp330 fig one shows an identical axe from Jansen J.V in \"De Trobriand Eilanded\", Museum voor land en Volkenkunde Rotterdam 1962 says. \"Some villages chiefly in the areas less suited to agriculture specialized in the making of basket work in woodcarving ... and the polishing of shone axe blades the material for which had to be imported from Woodlark Island, in Obowada and Okobobo. pp20. pictured on pp 19.
