            "value": "Maddalam or suddha maddalam. Barrel drum carved from jak (jack) wood Artocarpus heterophyllus.   The heads are of cow or buffalo skin. The sound of the bass, valantala head is modified by the application of a mixture of rice, charcoal powder and glue.  The treble, itantala head consists of a pair of skins, with the upper one cut away to provide an outer ring. The heads are attached to a plaited leather hoop, with buffalo skin lacing that passes over a wooden ring encircling the middle of the shell.  The drum has a striped cotton textile cover. A strap of similar material, incorporating a metal carrying hook, is attached by strips of calf skin. Made in Peramangalan, Thrissur."

            "value": "The suddha maddalam is played at festivals and rituals in an around the Hindu temples in Kerala. It features in temple ensembles such pancavadyam and maddalam keli. The sound of this drum also announces the start of the Kathakali dance drama performance, where is considered appropriate to accompany female characters because of its warmth of tone. (Male characters in Kathakali dance to the sound of the centa drum.) The maddalam drum is played horizontally at waist level, with the bass valanthala side struck by the left hand.  Small caps resembling thimbles are often worn for protection on the four fingers of the right hand that strike the treble ilantala head."
