See example of  udukku kutti, Museum no. 2002.296;\ntwo membranes: calf hide;\nstrings to hold the hoops of the membrane and to tune instrument: cotton mixed with synthetic material;\ntwo hoops to hold the membrane: wood;\ntwo thin strings attached to the left side of the drum: nylon;\nstraps to hold the drum: cotton mixed with synthetic material\n\nTools used for making instrument\nthe drum body is formed on a lathe machine\n\nConstruction process\nthe wooden body and the wooden hoops to fix the hides are provided by a carpenter who works according to the instruction given by the musician; the leather hides are provided by a traditional craftsman (kollan or tolkollan), who is specialised in producing drum membranes; strings and straps are bought at the market.  \nThe musician puts together the pieces as follows:\n-\tThe hides are glued to the wooden hoops;\n-\tHoles are drilled into the wooden hoops and hides;\n-\tThe two hides are fixed to the drum body by the strings; \n-\tThe instrument is tuned by tightening the strings;\n-\tThe nylon strings are attached to the non-playing side of the drum;\n-\tStraps to hold the drum are attached to the drum.\n\nPerformance\nHow instrument is held:\nheld in left hand and played with the right fingers; instrument is played in front of the body\n\nTechniques of performance:\nThe left hand embraces the instrument, the index finger of the left hand touches the drum body underneath the cotton straps. The thumb rests on the straps, which encompass the strings of the drum body at the waist. A slight thumb movement onto the straps squeezes the strings which increases or decreases the tension of the hides, ie changes the pitch of the drum. The right hand (actually the index and middle finger) strikes the drum in a way a frame drum is played (up and down). This technique allows the player to create subtle rhythmic and tonal effects. The thin nylon string attached to the left side of the drum produces a \u2018snare-drum\u2019 effect. The drum is only played on the right side.\n\nMusical function of instrument:\nprovides accompany rhythm for the Kerala singing style Ayyappan Pattu\n\nContext in which instrument is played:\nAyyappan or Shasta Pattu is performed in Kerala temples dedicated to the god Shasta or at special festivals (Ayyappa velakke) organised for the leaving pilgrims to the Ayyappa centre in Sabarimalai in South Kerala. At these festivals the whole story of Ayyappan\u2019s life is usually performed by the artists. Although the cult around the god Ayyappa became very popular in the last 15 years the Shasta temples are very old. Traditionally the players wear black mundus (loincloths) and necklaces of rudraksha beads (red seed) and sit on a peetam (low stool) or on a blanket on the floor).\n(RK)"
