            "value": "I\u1e37at\u0101\u1e37am. A pair of rim-cymbals with protection cloth and carrying bag. Molten bell metal for the cymbals is cast in a mould, and when hardened the instruments are forged by a blacksmith. Both cymbals have a central handle of coconut shell, which is secured by the knotted ends of a length of yellow cotton cord that passes through holes in the middle of the shell and the dome of the cymbal.  Made in Kadavalloor, Thrissur. The pair shown in this image are mounted for an exhibition."

            "value": "The i\u1e37at\u0101\u1e37am cymbals are held both horizontally, with the lower instrument the left hand, and vertically. The cymbals keep the beat (t\u0101lam) in various ensembles playing for dance and for Hindu ritual music in Kerala. In the pancavadyam temple ensemble, the ilat\u0101lam fulfil this vital role while the music increases in tempo. As the music speeds up, the number of beats in the cycle decreases, beginning with 1,792 and decreasing to 3\u00bd. The i\u1e37at\u0101\u1e37am serve to makes this beat audible whilst the drums in the ensemble: timila, maddalam, and idakka, improvise in turn."
