puppet

Glove puppet in the form of a man with a white painted ceramic face with gold painted headdress and facial features painted in red, black and green and green eyelids. Tiny Chinese characters written on the face. White-grey long nylon hair and moustache. Costume consists of brown textile, possibly silk, robe trimmed with white textile borders and white and pink fur and decorated with metallic foil, thread and coloured sequins. Yin-yang motif on the front of the costume. The legs, one blue and the other white, are formed of stuffed fabric at the end of which are wooden boots, painted brown, on raised white soles.

This puppet was purchased by Anthony Shelton from a U.S. dealer for $525. There was no information with it other than that it was thought to have been made in the 1940s or 1950s. It came with four other puppets in a set. It was tentatively identified by Ken Teague as representing a nobleman.
