A calf hide (kept in water) is fixed to the mouth of the drum body. \n\nPerformance\nHow instrument is held\nThe drum is put on the floor and the musician sits in front of the instrument and plays it with both hands. \n\nTechniques of performance\nIt is played by using both hands. The basic sounds (similar to thimila) are tha and thom, ie if outside fingers and part of the hand palm is used the sound tha is produced, if the four fingers are employed in the centre of the drum membrane and stopped it is called thom. Anyhow, a skilled player is able to produce many different sounds.\nThe mizhave is always played in pairs, one is the accompanying musician and the other the solo player (the roles could change during the performance). \n\nMusical function of instrument\nAs the real mizhave is kept in the temple theatre (kutambalom) the kutti is used in the house of the musicians for training purpose. Sometimes the instrument is also used to accompany the main mizhave player. \n\nContext in which instrument is played\nMusic connected to the Hindu festivals and rituals in Kerala, India (eg Nangyar koothe, Chakyar Koothe, Kutiyattam.\n(RK)"
