Based on workmanship and valves, this instrument would appear to date from the later part of this period. No serial number on instrument or valves. Mount for music holder on top of bell throat. Denting to bell flare and rim has been repaired by hammering and burnishing. Large tab-seamed bell gusset. One shank and mouthpiece associated with instrument. Leadpipe is short and curves too sharply to receive mouthpiece without the use of a shank. The shank provided with the instrument for this purpose is probably not original, as the fit with the leadpipe is poor. \n Mouthpiece marked: Lew Davis autograph \"super cushion-rim\". Probably dates from the mid 20th century. This is a trumpet mouthpiece with a fairly standard modern cup, though slightly on the shallow side and probably designed to facilitate playing in the high register. The mouthpiece rim, designed to promote endurance, is somewhat thicker than normal by modern standards, with a very rounded outer edge. The square external profile of the mouthpiece cup is designed to make the mouthpiece heavier, and thus louder. This mouthpiece was probably used for jazz playing. Wear marks on the mouthpiece shank indicate that it appears to have been used with the shank included with this instrument, although they are not a historically appropriate combination.
