"value": "A woman's skirt made from cotton and dyed with vegetable dyes. The textile is made in 2 sections on a backstrap loom. 2 length are sewn together at one selvedge; one section is the mirror image of the other. The middle seam of the type ru debo nadu'u (or fishbone) is finely made. The fabric is mainly warp-faced ikat, with ends doubled in the weft. [The patterning is described as it was woven (as stripes) rather than as worn (as bands).] The ikat patterned stripes have a red ground. At one selvedge (at the top and bottom of the skirt) is a broad ikat stripe, made up of 6 smaller stripes. These contain small repeat motifs. They are separated by paired, blue-black and cream speckled stripes. Alternate pairs of these narrower stripes are separated by thin lines of ikat on blue-black and slightly wider lines of ikat on red. Beside this ikat section is a solid blue-black stripe. Next is the main ikat stripe, containing the motif, called 'Ledo' which refers to an unidentified ancestress. The centre of the Ledo motif is 'pusat' or navel of the piece. This is framed by toothed pattern stripes which are identified by weavers either as centipedes or as the lightning reminding of the fight of the two founding ancestresses, Muji Babo and Lou Babo. The remaining half of this section comsists of 3 paired stripes. The repeat ikat motifs are mirroring each other in each pair. The pairs are dissected and framed by speckled lines. Between these pairs are broad, blue-black stripes patterned by lighter coloured lines. The dyes used are indigo (blue-black) and morinda citrifolia (red). [See original description for details.]"

Dim: Savunese call this piece commonly ei Ledo, sarong Ledo, Ledo being the name of an ancestress. (But I never came across this name in the genealogies. Is it a nickname, a mantra name?). From a scientific point of view, it is more accurate to say: ei hebe wo mea, hubi iki, hebe Ledo. The piece owns all characteristics of the lesser blossom group: four large bands of indigo per half piece, blue\/black edges at the middle seam. The motif called Ledo is in the middle of the panel. The centre of the Ledo motif is 'pusat' or navel of the piece. On both sides of the Ledo motif are zigzag lines which were identified by weavers either as centipedes or as the lightning reminding of the fight of the two founding ancestresses, Muji Babo and Lou Babo. (See Duggan, 2001: 19.28). White, red and indigo threads are twisted in dini and hika of wurumada, which is a earmark for wini Pu Tenga, named after the ancestress Tenga Ga (Duggan 2001: 50). The middle seam of the type ru debo nadu'u (or fishbone) is finely made."
