            "value": "Bersag horn, chromium plated brass tubing, one P\u00e9rinet valve, two water keys and valve finger button absent. Mouthpiece missing. The bersag horn is a variant of the military bugle. But unlike the traditional bugle, it is fitted with a single valve in order to increase the number of available pitches. The instrument was first employed by the Italian army and is named after the Bersaglieri (sharpshooter) corps who still use it today. It was used extensively by the British army in the first part of the 20th Century both for bugle calls, which could be played more fluently with the aid of the valve, and as a melody instrument in marching bands."

            "value": "The New World offered a range of marketing opportunities for Boosey & Hawkes, and their instrument designers were keen to develop models based on those already in use in America and Canada. 2004.828 is an example of an American G bugle with a discreet piston valve, concealed by the player's hand to give the impression that pitch changes are achieved purely by the lips, which Boosey & Hawkes imported this instrument in order to study the design. The instrument seen here is an example of the instruments that the company then produced for trans-Atlantic export. Many of the Boosey & Hawkes order book records for valved bugles in G state that they were intended to be sold in Canada.
