            "value": "Six keyed band flute in Bb, made by Hawkes and Son. This Bb bass flute is made from blackwood or cocus wood, with nickel silver plated keywork and stuffed leather pads. It was designed to be played in a flute band. In the early 20th century, flute and drum bands were used to lead foot regiments as they marched. After the First World War, motorised transport reduced the need for troops to march over long distances, and the flute and drum bands were gradually replaced by the more familiar military bands for ceremonial functions.In order to add length to the flute and therefore reach lower notes, the mouthpiece is fitted on a u-shaped tube. This ensures that the player can blow on the mouthpiece and still reach all its keys easily."
