A knot is a structure formed by at least three points of contact grouped on a single cord. Tying a knot involves, on the whole, two distinct phases. First comes the intertwining process, and then the tightening. A properly formed knot made of one single continuous cord shows perfect symmetry of formation and is identical in appearance, whether seen from the front or the back. There are in all 33 kinds of knots, and their names have a poetic echo of their own, such as butterfly, chrysanthemum, dragonfly. A sequence of knots ending in a tassel, varying in form and intended for use as an ornament, is called Maedup. The knots in turn are tied with braided silk cords of many colours. The Maedup was once widely used indoors to decorate blinds, paintings, door screens; or to ornament palace and Buddhist palanquins for rituals, ceremonies and so on.
