These particular spears were part of a collection that a Karamajong warrior had fixed to a donkey ready for quick use when the need arose. The army took both the spear collection and also the donkey."

            "value": "Part of a collection comprising of items confiscated by the African Kings Rifles during territorial disputes between Karamajong and Turkana groups, who waged over cattle ownership in the lead up to Ugandan independence in 1962, as well as other items gifted to Wood during agricultural inspection tours of the area. This is an object that provides a fascinating insight into late colonial east African politics, illuminating the consequences of the transfer of the Ugandan Rudolf Province to Kenya and the subsequent delineation of Turkana and Karamajong grazing rights. Although cattle raiding between these groups had historical roots in the region, the failures of subsequent disarmament campaigns led by the Kings African Rifles (associated with this object) led to restricted movement between two territories with important implications for the agricultural-economic development of the region and integration into Ugandan and Kenyan national politics (a problem that remains today)."
