            "value": "Furnishing consisting of a rectangular tabby-woven, cotton hammock sewn together from 5 strips. Each strip is approximately 151mm wide, and decorated with a black and white chequered pattern. Adjacent squares are alternatingly banded or striped. The outer strips have been hemmed on the longer sides. The shorter sides have been hemmed to create a tunnel at both ends. 2 small rectangular tabby-woven panels have been sewn, evenly spaced, onto each longer side.  They are decorated with black, white, yellow and red bands, as well as 3 bands of  red and white diamond\/chevron patterns. The later are worked in continuous supplementary weft. At each hemmed corner they are decorated with attached yellow and violet tassels. Either side of each small panel plied black and white cords have been threaded through the textile. They are also decorated with a yellow and violet tassel at the end."

            "value": "Sierra Leonean county cloth hammock with 'tortoise' or 'haku' basket weave, collected by Paul Shuffrey, District Commissioner of Pujehun from 1913 to 1923.\n\nHammocks such as this were commonly used to carry chiefs and other 'big men' in rural Sierra Leone along the narrow forest pathways that connected villages before the construction of wider road networks after World War II. Hammocks of this kind were also a favoured form of transport for early colonial officials. Travelling hammocks were often accompanied by a carrying frame and a wooden cover, slung with cloth, to keep the passenger in the shade, however these are often missing in European collections. This example has particularly fine side flaps decorated with weft inlay. These would have hung down from the main hammock slung and been the most visible part of the weaving displayed to the public. Hammocks were sometimes specially woven for specific events and made to match the outfit of its passenger."

                    "transcription": "Sierra Leone country cloths Donor: Mrs. K. Graham. July 1955. [Dr. Easmon presented a copy of Sierra Leone Country Cloths in Novermber, but to judge from the correspondence never saw the collection]. Collected by Mrs. Graham's brother, Paul Shuffrey, who was a District Officer (North Sherbro District) in Sierra Leone between 1913 and 1923. The record is not clear on the number of items. Mrs. Graham says that the collection consists of the following country cloths: 18 large ones, 9 hammocks, 9 small striped ones, 2 tuffted, but the checker's marks would indicate that there were only 16 large cloths. My records indicate that 27.5. 55\/9 is a blue cotton gown and that 27.5.55\/24 is a cap. I can find only the following numbered items here: 2.7.55\/21 and 2.7.55\/27. 5 November 1975 (signed Valerie)"
