The wrestplank is split and pulling away from the sides and the bridges are lifting from the soundboard.In my opinion, the instrument should be detensioned. Similar damage is to be seen on M24.8.56\/100a, another bell harp but with a John Simcock label. This instrument does not have a label but looks very similar to the signed one, although in some very small respects, less finely made. The wood is much darker than shown in the photograph. All the strings are iron on this example. The other one is strung entirely in brass - probably what it would have been originally. The rods or wires embedded on the nut and bridges that define the sounding length of the strings are present and of iron, rather than of brass as on the other example.\n26 May 2022 - MW detensioned the strings by about a minor third. The pitch was already quite low. All strings remain on their respective wrestpins but the stringing at both bridge and wrestpin ends is much less neat and workmanlike than on M24.8.56\/100a.
