FK.\nhistorical file; 3 April 1905; Memorandum 3 April 1905, this is the English translation of the attached document written in Rarotongan:\nMemorandum\nThe district of Orokolo is situated on the Gulf of Papua New Guinea in the British New Guinea; and includes six villages. The people are black & light coloured natives, and were cannibals until recent years; but are now coming under the influence of Christianity and Civilization. They were first visited by the late Rev. J. Chalmers in 1879 see \u2018Work + Adventures in New Guinea\u2019 Relig. Tract society. This is the Tradition of the people of Orokolo concerning the Two Idols Ivo and Ukaipu. They were persons, and they were the ancestors of the family of Tpoveo who is he king of Orokolo. Ivo is the name of the first man of that family. This is the meaning of the name Ivo; viz. The earth around the stem of the Wild Ginger Plant. Not being sure if my memory was playing me a trick I did not write my name and the comment I wish to make in the Visitors Book as I wished to hear from my wife if she, too, thought with me that the correct name is IVA and not IVO.\nShe confirms my opinion but even now I should like to be able to look up the record of the proceedings of the British Association, 1902, when the meetings were held in Ireland I think. Be that as it may, I am responsible for what is recorded of Iva and Ukaipu and am naturally anxious that what is correct shall be preserved.\nOf course it is a mere detail that does not matter to 99% of the visitors to your Museum but I am sure that the smallest detail does count with you and the men who work assiduously for education.\nIt is possible that we have both got a bit mixed up and because Iva was such a general name with us in our later years in the Gulf of Papua we have unwittingly confused it with the name you are preserving. But I find myself up against something that is more confusing when thinking of the exhibit that is said to represent Ibo. \nBe gracious enough to believe that I am not carping about things. I am simply curious in the interest of truth to know how this particular exhibit was procured. Tuka acquired a pair of statues, one male and one female, from the chief of Orokolo when he converted him to Christianity, and sent them to the Rev. J.J.K. Hutchin, his superior based on Rarotonga in the Cook Islands. When Hutchin retired and returned home to his native Catford, he sold this female statue to the Horniman Museum in 1903. Hutchin sold the male figure to the Hastings Museum in Kent at the same time.\n\nThese were the ancestral deities of Orokolo, the first Elema man Ivo and his wife Ukaipu. Ukaipu is the ultimate female ancestor of all Elema people. In the Elema myth explaining the origins of humanity, Ivo was created first, and then, feeling lonely, he dreamed about a woman coming out from inside the Wild Ginger plant. For two nights, Ivo dreamed the same dream and woke to find nothing, but after the third night, he woke to find his wife, and the mother of all the Elema, Ukaipu. The skirt was added by the missionaries to hide the goddess\u2019s genitals. As pieces of Papuan Gulf art, these objects are quite unique.\n \nWood, pigment, vegetable fibre. Mid 19th-Century.
