Sarasvati

Polychrome painting on glass depicting Sarasvati, the goddess of music and wisdom, playing a vina. She is depicted crowned and seated, with four arms, holding the vina in one left hand and playing it with one right hand; the other two hands hold a book and a rosary. She wears a long scarf and a blue and white striped sari with gold detailing. Set against a red ground with a stippled pattern; above is a lotus shaped arch.

This type of painting was popular among the middle classes who would buy them when on a pilgrimage and take home to hang in the home.
