            "value": "The following is taken from the BA dissertation Conservation of Nineteenth Century Maldivian Paper Kites  (1997) by Michelle Gibson (School of Art History and Conservation , Camberwell College of Arts). The dissertation focuses exclusively on Horniman objects  3.238 \u2013 3.243. (Archived in the Conservation Dept.)\n\nGibson writes that the three Horniman kites are the survivors of an original collection of 6. Of these 6 three are recorded as having decorative tails, ribbons and ropes. Of those which exist today, none have tails, but all are highly decorative and designed to \u2018sing\u2019 or hum when flown. \n\nIn the \u2018Historical Background\u2019 section of her dissertation Gibson describes various kite flying traditions from South Asia, East Asia and South East Asia. She observes that the Horniman examples are similar in structure and design to  Mayalsyian wau or moon kites and Indian tukkal  festival kites. \nGibson also presents a description of kite flying in the Maldives as recorded in Maloney, C. 1980. \u2018People of the Maldives\u2019. Longman: New Delhi.  p  168.\n\n\u201c...The time to fly kites begins in Mila nakai  in December, and lasts as long as there is a wind blowing from the east. The kite (gudi) has many forms, each with its name (ranagudi, koka, va, avihi which is a nakai, telanga probably from Telugu, madi, bot and harufa). One kind has a second string attached, so the kite tail can be controlled. Another kind has no tail, and yet another has a tail of palm fronds six feet long. There used to be competition in kite flying, such as cutting of opponent\u2019s strings by rubbing powdered glass on one\u2019s own string, as in India.
