There is no mention of any objects accessioned on 3.3.50 in the 'Gifts' or 'Purchases' registers for 1950, but a record card in the Musical Instrument section itemises the following: '3.3.50\/2 1 Maori Nose Flute, Vendor: Webster, 17a Lambolle St. NW3'.             "value": "Short Flute, Nguru, New Zealand Maori.\n\nFor many years, it was believed that the nguru was a nose-played flute like those of Central Polynesia, but this is now widely discounted. They were played by holding the broad end to the mouth, with the upturned narrow end furthest away. \n\nAccording to Maori heritage, flutes were gifted to humanity by the goddess Hineraukatauri, and she is often identified as one of the human figures carved on many musical instruments. The Maori consider the breath (te h\u0101) as the essence of life itself, and so wind instruments both celebrate and control the forces of life when played.\nNguru flutes were traditionally played in large entertainment houses (whare tapere) where a large audience could gather to listen. The musical arts were practiced most intensively after the main harvest of kumara (sweet potatoes) in the winter.\n\nNguru typically had two holes on the upper side, stopped with the index and middle fingers, and a third hole on the outer curve underneath, stopped with the thumb. In addition to this, many nguru also have a hole drilled through the wooden body to allow them to be worn around the neck, or even hung from an ear piercing.\n\nNguru were carved in stone, wood and whale ivory. The majority of wooden examples were made in Totara (Podocarpus totara) or Kauri (Agathis australis) wood, and almost all examples are 7-10 cm in length. The example here is exceptionally large at 17 cm. Although the overall shape is suggestive of a whale tooth, and some ivory examples do exist, experts have shown that the range of notes found on the ivory examples reveal them to be later pieces. It seems most likely that the nguru takes the form of a gourd\u2019s upturned stem. Even as late as the 19th Century, Maori children were still making their own musical instruments from these plants.\n\nThe earliest known nguru was excavated in northern New Zealand by archaeologists in the 1980s, dating to the early 16th Century, and this flute was made from the curved stem end of a gourd. \n\nHardwood, Haliotis shell. Although little used today, both flutes are thought to have been used to accompany singing. The nguru may have had an additional use as a signaling device. The nguru may originally have been made from the tooth of a whale, and examples made from wood or clay retain the distinctively curved whale tooth shape."
