            "value": "Sam-ta or message board. First half of the Twentieth Century (after the Younghusband Mission to Tibet). Probably from Lhasa.\n\n\nSamtas were re-usable message boards used to send short but urgent notes. They were used by government and monastic officials. The reply would be written by scrubbing off the message, applying fresh chalk powder and writing with a bamboo pen. As the dry bamboo tip scratched through the surface, the black background of the board came through to form the text.\n\nThe base burgundy colour, flower patterns and burgundy coloured leather binder seem to suggest use by a high ranking aristocratic or monastic official.\n\nThe message, in fast cursive calligraphy using an official style and flowery idioms, roughly translates to: \n\nBottom board-  \n\n\u201cTo the Mem-Sahib [a European lady in British India] enjoying glorious health, I beg to submit:   I am delighted to know that the Samta message I recently submitted to the Minister [blon chen?], was found to be of interest\/ benefit to your Ladyship.\u201d\n\n Top board-\n\n\u201cFurthermore, kindly accept these Samta and quality divine assessor [Khatag or white scarf for good luck]. I hope that you will like them.   Sent by J. D. [or is it  Z.D.?]  on the 28th [No month or year is indicated].\u201d\n\n\nBought by the Horniman in 1960. Previously held by the Berkeley Galleries."
