            "value": "A long, hand woven linen dress.  It is A-line in shape and made up of many smaller pieces of fabric hand sewn together.   It has a small upright collar and a 'V' shaped neck opening and sleeves set square into the body of the dress.  There is heavily worked embroidery in three separate areas: around the neck, along the top of the arms and at the lower front and back of the garment.  The thread used is  black wool (hair).  The embroidery over the arms is counted thread work,  producing an all-over pattern of large triangles and squares.  Areas of stitching have been worked in different directions, enabling the light to reflect differentially,  revealing the patterning.  There is embroidery at the placket and on the collar. The embroidery in the lower half of the garment (the back more extensive than the front) has rectangular 'columns' of solid embroidery interspersed with a vertical diamond pattern.  The cuffs are edged with linen (?) fringing and the lower end of the sleeve is lined with red cotton and  edged with purple rick rack.  [Textile]"

                    "transcription": "Macedonian peasant costume; the making of this garment from flax to finished article is carried out by the wearer.  Only very primitive implements are used.  The flax is beaten out by a contraption of two notched pine trees joined in the form of a St. Andrews cross, and to manipulate this the woman must jump to catch the upper beam and bring it down upon the flax.  The hand loom is home made and all dyes are made from herbs.  The  women work in the fields in this heavy garment which is worn all the year round, in the tropical summer heat and bitter winter cold of the Macedonian climate."
