Text reads: The small Afo tribe lives across the Benue from the Idoma \u2026 The two figures from the Horniman Museum, among the very finest works of art to come from Africa, were not identified as Afo work until ten years ago, when an equally fine piece in the same style was found in a cult house where it still remains as one of the most sacred objects of the tribe and the supposed source of increase and wellbeing. Exhaustive research has failed to find other examples there, although the style was succeeded, probably about the turn of the century, by one of more mediocre quality. The Afo used to have good reputation amongst neighbouring tribes as woodcarvers and brass-workers, and the fine stool (in the old style) from the Berlin Museum was in fact collected at Wukari in the Jukun country to the south-east across the Benue.\nCatalogue entry: Two mother-and-child carvings in the old style. Text reads [re Afo stool from Museum f\u00fcr V\u00f6lkerkunde, Berlin.]: The Afo are a very small tribe living between Nasarwa and the Benue in Northern Nigeria, who seem to have produced at least four pieces of Africa\u2019s finest sculpture, although only one of them is with certainty attributable to this tribe, being still in use in one of their villages in the cult of the tribal mother spirit. All four are quite clearly in the same style, although \u2026 (the) stool \u2026 was collected by Glauning in 1904* more than 200 kilometres to the east, at the Jukun capital, Wukari. The Afo are known to have had a reputation as craftsmen among the surrounding tribes, and we must presume that this stool had travelled exceptional distance.\n\n*Frobenius in 1910 in Nigerian Images (1963)\n\n1966 Dakar (Festival Mondial des Arts N\u00e8gres). 31.42 was shown.
